What installers need to know about bitumen waterproofing

When it comes to bitumen waterproofing systems, roofing installers play a key role in ensuring long life and reliability of the membranes. That’s why we at Soprema support our installers around Ireland by providing in-house training, while our team of field technicians carry out regular site visits, advise on quality application, and provide documented reports on the work.

We partner closely with installers, encouraging them to take the time over details when planning the application. This approach pays off in the long term, ensuring the waterproofing systems on clients’ projects – both flat roofs and other applications – continue to perform over their expected service life of more than 30 years. This makes maintenance of the roof easier and increases longevity of the waterproofing membrane while ensuring continued protection against leaks and water damage.

Advice and assistance with multiple waterproofing systems

Soprema bituminous membranes are designed to be flexible, making them suitable for use with acute detail. They are fully compatible with other Soprema systems such as liquid, and structural (hotmelt) waterproofing, making them suitable for hybrid waterproofing systems on flat roofs with upstands. To ensure optimal performance, we recommend working with surfaces that are clean, smooth, and free from debris. This ensures proper adhesion and prevents any potential conflicts with other roof waterproofing membranes.

And where a roofing project calls for using multiple different waterproofing systems, we train our installers to focus especially on joint areas, using proper detailing and flashing techniques to eliminate the risk of water infiltration.

A matter of timing: when to apply the right bitumen membrane

The advantage with bitumen waterproofing is that it can be self-adhesive, torch-applied or mechanically fixed. Deciding which one to use might come down to the type of project being undertaken. We can also advise where timing is a factor in applications: for example, with self-adhesive underlay, the cap sheet must be installed within seven days, to guarantee the strongest possible bond.

Support with BCAR compliance

Our close support of installers also ensures that waterproofing work complies with the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations 2014, or BCAR. This regulation provides a comprehensive system of monitoring and control of certain buildings or works, including waterproofing. It requires mandatory design certification, lodgement of plans and particulars, builder’s supervision and certification. At Soprema, we can ensure installations meet the standards the legislation requires.

Why maintenance is key to longevity in waterproofing systems

An often-overlooked part of waterproofing is regular inspection and maintenance. We recommend this to clients as a key part of preserving the performance of bitumen waterproofing systems. Ideally, maintenance practices such as cleaning, repairs, or recoating, and gutter unblocking should take place at least once a year. This can identify areas of a roof that could be at risk of common hazards such as birds nesting or plants growing on the roof where the roots penetrate the membrane, causing water ingress.

With the right knowledge and attention to detail, roofing contractors can confidently install bitumen membranes while maintaining compatibility with other waterproofing systems – ultimately contributing to the overall success and durability of the roofing structure.
