Carbon Invoice and Quote
SOPREMA shows the carbon footprint of its products, from the quote to the final invoice.
At SOPREMA, we have been committed to sustainability for over 30 years. As the industry evolves, we continue to improve our products to support responsible building practices, always striving for better and more sustainable solutions. But we know there is still more to do!
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time. With the latest IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report making it clear—we need to act now.
That is why SOPREMA is leading the way as one of the first in our industry to track the carbon footprint of its products—from the initial quote to the final invoice.
We are not just here to raise awareness; we are here to help people understand the impact of their choices. That’s why every invoice now includes a carbon footprint calculation from cradle to gate.
This is more than just numbers—it is about making informed decisions for a more sustainable future. We are excited to spark conversations, drive change, and work together to build a better tomorrow, today!
Did you know...
23% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are generated by the building sector.
18.74% of raw materials purchased from SOPREMA are bio-based or made from recycling.
Over 100 EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) inform you about the carbon footprint of SOPREMA products.

SOPREMA and Carbon Neutrality
At SOPREMA, we are taking real action to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across our entire business. With the support of Carbone 4, we have measured our carbon footprint throughout our supply chain. This assessment gives us a clear starting point to track our progress and drive meaningful change as we work towards carbon neutrality by 2050.
We are making significant strides—reducing fossil-based materials, increasing the use of recycled raw materials, and cutting emissions in our energy use and transport. Every step brings us closer to a more sustainable future.
But we are not stopping there. Thanks to our R&D and Industrial teams, we now provide clear product emissions data—so you, a client, can see the impact of your choices too.
SOPREMA products now come with transparent, science-backed GHG emission details, helping us all make informed decisions for a lower-carbon future.
The Strenghts of SOPREMA
Less than 40% of virgin fossil materials remain in our bituminous membranes, thanks to the relentless and continuous work of our various R&D centres over the past 30 years.
When it comes to insulation, the proportion of recycled materials in our XPS is among the best on the market, which contributes to reducing our GHG emissions across the group.
The strategic locations of our factories and warehouses help promote the shortest possible delivery routes to our customers. We actively measure our carbon performance daily using a dedicated tool and work with our transport partners to find the best solutions for reducing carbon impact (optimising flows, loads, engine types, and modal alternatives, etc.)

How do we Calculate CO₂eq Impact?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) document is like a product’s environmental report card, showing its impact from start (cradle) to finish (grave). It tracks everything—from the raw materials used to how it's transported, installed, and eventually disposed of. Think of it as a "carbon footprint" that tells the full story of a product’s life.
At SOPREMA, we are committed to transparency. We have gathered and analysed environmental data for all our products with an EPD. For products without one, we have developed our own method to measure their environmental impact—because knowing the facts helps us all make better choices.
To compare greenhouse gases, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) uses a unit called CO₂eq (Carbon Dioxide Equivalent). This helps us understand how different gases affect the planet.
By tracking and sharing this data, we are working to lower our carbon footprint—and giving you the information to make more sustainable choices.
Tell me more about the Logistics Data...
Although customer deliveries account for less than 10% of our total carbon footprint, every step towards reducing emissions matters. That’s why SOPREMA has teamed up with a leading logistics data expert to develop a powerful tool that accurately measures the carbon impact of each delivery.
Here’s how it works: We calculate the carbon footprint of transporting our products to customers based on emissions from the final transport stage—covering everything from fuel extraction to vehicle use (known as “well to wheel”). This follows the EN 16258 standard, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
To make our calculations as precise as possible, we apply a carbon emissions factor specific to the vehicle used, using a trusted source—the Ademe Carbon Database.
By tracking every delivery’s impact, we are taking another step toward cutting emissions and building a more sustainable future—one shipment at a time!

Frequently Asked Questions...
CO₂ equivalent (CO₂eq) is a unit created by the IPCC to compare greenhouse gases. Each greenhouse gas behaves differently and has a different Global Warming Potential (GWP). The idea behind CO₂eq is to convert each gas into the equivalent amount of CO₂ based on its GWP. This gives us a common unit that makes it easier to compare the impact of different greenhouse gases on climate change.
An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a standard document that shows the results of a product’s life cycle analysis, along with health-related information. The life cycle is broken down into several stages for calculation. Our methodology takes into account stages A1, A2, and A3 of the product’s life cycle. It’s important to note that it doesn’t include the stages of installation, use, or end of life. SOPREMA teams are working on addressing these stages to provide answers to customers as quickly as possible.
As of now, SOPREMA is, to our knowledge, the first player in the building sector to provide such detailed information to clients about the carbon impact of its products. By sharing this information directly on quotes and invoices, we can be transparent with our customers about our impact on the planet we all call home. Currently, there is no legal requirement to include this data. However, SOPREMA has chosen to think ahead, using this opportunity to engage with customers on topics beyond just our product range, helping to improve their overall understanding of the carbon impact of our products.
As mentioned, companies are not currently required to include this information on quotes and/or invoices. However, it is not prohibited, and any voluntary and good-faith effort is actually encouraged.
In the medium term, this data will likely be very useful when responding to tenders or selecting products for projects. This is why SOPREMA has invested so much effort into this initiative—our goal is to support our customers now so that you are ready when you need it.
We do, however, ask our customers to carefully consider the methodology and to include the methodological details found at the bottom of the invoice and described in the section. Should you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with a member of our team directly.
No, this data is provided completely free of charge.
Recycling is something we consider, but the product’s end of life is not included yet. The stages of installation, use, and disposal still need to be worked on. SOPREMA teams are working on this and will provide answers to customers as soon as possible.
The carbon footprint (CO₂eq) of our products, which represents their impact on climate change, comes from modules A1, A2, and A3 of individual or collective EPD.
The carbon footprint (CO₂eq) of transporting these products to the customer, which reflects their impact on climate change, includes emissions (from well to wheel) from the final transport stage, calculated using the EN 16258 standard.
For products that do not have an EPD, we have intentionally used higher estimates through an internal calculation of modules A1, A2, and A3, based on emission factors from reference databases (such as Ecoinvent) or sourced from partners EPD.
These data are not legally binding, nor do they represent a full life cycle analysis or replace the official documentations such as EPD.
The data may be updated and are provided subject to future changes in the calculation methods for climate change impact and carbon emission factor databases.
SOPREMA has chosen to inform its customers only about the carbon footprint of the manufacturing stage for two main reasons:
-
The manufacturing stage is where the carbon impact is highest, accounting for 55% to 90% of emissions, depending on the product.
-
The most significant opportunities to reduce GHG emissions lie within the manufacturing stage. However, we have also identified actions across the entire product life cycle, especially at the end of life stage, focusing on the recyclability of our products and the pathways for reuse or recycling.
The transport impact in an EPD is typically based on an average delivery scenario. However, we have chosen to provide data based on the actual journey, taking into account the type of truck used and its loading capacity. It’s important to note that we are still refining the process, as currently, only the final transport stage (from the warehouse to the customer) is included. Improvements are underway as we work to enhance this process.
Yes, all quotes and invoices created will include all the same the information.
