Freedom of design with ALSAN liquid waterproofing systems

In our previous blog, we focused on the advantages of liquid waterproofing systems; in this blog we look at what makes them a viable option for architects seeking to incorporate unique-looking surfaces in their projects.

High-end liquid waterproofing membranes provide fully watertight surfaces and, importantly from an architect’s perspective, they’re ideally suited to projects where the design calls for aesthetically pleasing floor finishing layers. ALSAN liquid waterproofing systems offer architects the versatility and freedom of design with endless possibilities.

PMMA resins, such as Soprema’s ALSAN 770 and 770 TX range, are more versatile than many architects and specifiers might realise. And if the project budget is a factor, polyurethane (PU)-based liquids are a viable option too.

Available in a wide range of RAL colours with special finishes, ALSAN systems are suitable for waterproofing flat roofs (including details and upstands), balconies, decks, floors, stairways, walkways, wet rooms, ramps and car parks. With many different resins in the Soprema range, there's a variety of different applications, in single or multiple layers as needed.

A range of versatile finishes

We offer a wide range of finishing layers. For example, ALSAN  Floor Stone is a high-grade, mechanically durable resin that is used as a wearing layer for ALSAN PMMA systems and can be supplied in any colour used for creating patterns or lettering together with different finishings, such as chips or sand, to achieve the desired slip-resistant properties.

For surfaces with coloured sand finishing, ALSAN 970 FT is a colourless, clear and mechanically durable sealer. For decorative finishes, ALSAN COLOUR QUARTZ, ALSAN QUARTZ SAND and ALSAN DECO CHIPS can be used in conjunction with other finishes. Coatings for ALSAN 971 F and 972 F are available in any colour and can also be used to create patterns or markings. Both products are used as a wearing layer for ALSAN PMMA systems.

Suitable for new build and refurbishment projects

We advise clients to consider the use of the building when choosing the right liquid waterproofing option. If a surface will have a lot of traffic in the form of vehicles or people, then a robust, hard-wearing option such as a PMMA resin is advisable.

Liquid waterproofing like the ALSAN 770 range are extremely versatile and well suited to new build projects in a wide range of applications such as waterproofing of basements, up to floors, terraces, balconies, car park decks, and flat roofs. There are literally hundreds of different permutations, all achievable within the ALSAN 770 range. Liquids can even be used for retention zones in factories with a bunded area to stop liquids leaking out.

Fast acting, long lasting

What’s more, liquids are fast and easy to apply: high-end PMMA resins like ALSAN 770 cure in a matter of hours. This is a significant advantage in refurbishment projects such as apartment developments like Priory Hall, where there is limited access to an apartment for only a short time during the working day to cure the balcony with liquid waterproofing. In addition, liquids do not require flame during application, which is an important consideration if working on listed or historic buildings such as the GPO or the Custom House in Dublin, where conservation is important.

In short, there’s more to liquid waterproofing than low-end acrylic products found in hardware stores. With high-quality products, there's no limit to architects’ imagination.
